Sending your family strength and peace as you honor what an awesome man Uncle Marty was. Always good for a laugh (and a beer!), I have many cherished memories of him. I hope the good memories and knowing how proud he was of each of you helps to carry you through the dark days.

Grieving is the only beautifully selfish act. Despite what we were already so fortunate to have, like children we succumb to the insistent, thunderous pulse in our hearts that screams indignantly for more, more, more—but instead of toys or candy, we crave more time, more chances, more memories. We cry out because something—someone—we loved was taken from us, wrested from our grasp before we were finished enjoying it. But we are only so covetous of “more” because we loved so deeply, so purely, so beautifully, that upon its departure that person’s soul tore with it part of our own, and we have no other recourse but to scramble to patch that desperate void with selfish pleas for more. I was lucky enough to have this man in my life for 34 years; and although it’s irrational, I will likely spend at least the next 34 wondering why I could not have had more.
