Obituary for Samuel C. Maloney III

SAMUEL C. MALONEY, III, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on January 29, 2021. Devoted companion to Barbara Cantor for over 30 years and devoted husband to the late Rosella Mae Maloney (nee Cornell). Loving father to Dorothy McDougle and her husband, the late Roger McDougle; Barbara Margolies and her husband, Larry; Shirley Fisher and her husband, Brian, Dianna Maloney; Samuel C. Maloney IV, and his wife, the late Pauline Maloney; and the late Stephen Maloney and his wife, Helen Maloney. Beloved grandfather to Joseph Welsh, Patricia Lorincz, William McDougle, Maureen Benze, Michael Margolies, Michael Evans, Amanda Greiner, Matthew Evans, Zoey Fisher, Brian Maloney, Jake Leidy Maloney, Sara Leidy Maloney, Emily Leidy Maloney, the late Samuel C Maloney V, Joseph Branca, Jade Maloney-Mogle, Cheyanne Maloney, and Riley Kahlert, also survived by 28 great grandchildren.

Sam grew up in West Oak Lane Philadelphia and was raised by two loving parents, Louella and Samuel C. Maloney Jr. He loved animals and had a duck named Cliffy (Sam’s nickname was Cliffy), a dog named Teddy, and a rabbit. He loved gardening and spent many hours with his parents growing eggplants and tomatoes.

Sam became friends with a girl who lived down the block, and she became his future wife, Rosella. They raised their six children in Northeast Philadelphia.

While starting his family Sam began his career as a plumber by working with his maternal grandfather, Harry Faltenbacher. In his early days of working, he would travel up and down the east coast, following the work. This took him too many different cities and several states as far north as Rhode Island all the way south to Florida.

One of the things he enjoyed away from work was taking his family on annual summer vacations to Wildwood NJ. This would include lots of days on the beach, walking on the boardwalk (mind the tramcar please!) fishing, crabbing and playing Canasta.

As the years went by and his children grew, sadly Rosella passed away after 31 years of marriage. His children had all started families of their own, and a few of them had moved to Arizona. Sam would attend just about every special event he could (graduations, weddings and births) for each of his 18 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren which included traveling to Arizona many times.

Sam retired as a Master Plumber with Local Plumbers Union 690 after 67 years in the profession. He loved his trade and the people he worked with and never missed a plumber’s picnic even after he was retired. Sam carried on this family tradition by also bringing his son Sam and grandson Sammy into the plumbing trade.

Sam enjoyed many things: he liked to travel, dining out especially at buffets and diners but his favorite pastime was watching good old Black and White Western movies. But what Sam enjoyed most of all was the love of his family.

Sam began a new chapter in his life story after ten years of being widowed. He met Barbara Cantor who became his life partner for over 30 years. Sam adored her and was truly lucky to find love for a second time in his life. Sam and Barbara were very good together. Barbara completed him. One of their favorite activities was lunch at the Club House Diner. The owner and all the wait staff knew both of them by name and what their order would be without asking. They also liked going to the AMC movies and make a day of seeing several shows back to back.

Sam was known for his generosity and caring. As a team, Sam and Barbara would send out dozens of birthday and Christmas cards every year to each and every child, grand child and great grandchild. Sam will be missed in more ways than one, a Loving Lifelong Partner, a Loving Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, and as a mentor to many plumbers able to teach and laugh with the best of them. His legacy lives on through his family.
