Obituary for Robert J. "Bob" Truitt

Robert J. "Bob" Truitt
Robert J. Truitt passed away on December 19, 2017, surrounded by his family. Bob was a one in a million. He had both successful and fulfilling professional and personal lives. A man who always treated others with kindness and respect, he made connections and relationships with almost everyone he met throughout his lifetime. Those who met him loved him.

Robert grew up in Frankford, and attended St. Joan of Arc Grade School and North Catholic High School. He was one of seven children, and loved his mother fiercely. In 1965, his brother Joe introduced him to Geraldine Bracken. Their first date began by getting ashes on Ash Wednesday, and Gerry later became his wife. Bob and Gerry were married for fifty years, and had four children: Bob, Tom, Jeff and Megan. Bob often took his family to the shore, circulating North Wildwood on his bike, giving his children rides on the back seat one at a time. He also loved coaching Little League Baseball for his sons, and cherished his championship baseball from the year all three boys were on the team together.

Throughout his life, Bob loved spending long weekends in North Wildwood, New Jersey, where he could often be seen walking mile upon mile on the Sea Wall and boardwalk, taking in some sun. His other favorite shore hobbies were reading on his deck, and hanging out with his family on the front porch of his house on Taylor Avenue, and cleaning his pool in Feasterville to always have it ready for impromptu family pool parties. Bob was also an avid golfer, who loved hitting the links with his children, brother Joseph, and friend Joe.

Bob had ten beautiful grandchildren who brought him countless memories full of joy and laughter: Zoe, Ella, Ally, Sabrina, Tommy, Emma, Alaina, Daphne, Mary, and Cooper. Spending time with his family was Bob’s favorite pastime, going from game to dance show to music concert, sometimes all in one day, to watch his grandchildren do their thing.

In addition to creating a rich personal and family life, Robert’s professional accomplishments were many. After serving in the Marine Corps for four years, Robert attended Temple University, where he majored in Industrial Management. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business for Economics and Finance, and went on to receive a certificate of completion from Harvard University in the Senior Management and Negotiations Program. He was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, L.D.H. from Holy Family University.
Bob held numerous positions with Crown, Cork, & Seal during his 35 years with the company. His national and international experience included such positions as Corporate Vice President of Human Resources, Vice President of Manufacturing, Senior Vice President of Operations, and President of the Beverage Division for 8 years before retiring in 2008. He was also the Chairman of the Pension and Benefits program for the Corporation or 10 years. In addition to his work at Crown, Bob gave his time various organizations. He was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Aria Health System, and had also served as a Trustee for the Aria Health Foundation Board for 15 years. He became an Emeritus member of the Board of Trustees of Holy Family University, as well as a board member of Delaware Valley Resource Center. Also serving as past Chairman of the Board of St. Christopher School, Robert recently served on the LaSalle University Business Advisory Board, the Wharton School of Business-Labor Management Council, the Can Manufacturers Institute, and the Pennsylvania chamber of Commerce. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the Northeast YMCA. He has been a guest Professor at LaSalle University and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Management in the MBA Program. He was also Executive in Residence and Lecturer at Rutgers University in the School of Management in Camden NJ, and was a member of the Gamma Sigma Honor Society.

Bob was a wonderful father, grandfather, colleague, businessman, and friend. He was a person who will be missed my many but forgotten by none.

A viewing will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm and Saturday, December 23, 2017, from 9:00am until 10:15am at LOUIS A.
