Obituary for Michael Valente

MICHAEL VALENTE, age 88, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2023, at St. Joseph Manor. Devoted husband to the late Assunta Valente (nee Pacitti). Loving father to Maria Capozzi (Anthony) and the late Lucia Fiorelli. Beloved Nonno to Danielle, Alexandra, Michelle, and Francesca. Dear brother to Maria Valenti (the late Peter).

Michael was born on July 25, 1934 in the small farming town of Cerasuolo, Lazio, Italy to the late Olympio and Assunta Valente. Growing up, he worked with his father as a stone mason until immigrating to America in 1955. The hard-work ethic instilled in him as a child allowed Michael to begin achieving the American dream, all while writing letters back to his future wife, Assunta, whom he would return to Italy to marry in 1959.

After their wedding, Michael returned to America, this time with Assunta by his side, where they would settle in Philadelphia, PA and begin their marriage of 63 years. They would go on to have their two daughters, Maria and Lucia a few years later. Michael worked hard as a forklift driver at Crown, Cork and Seal for 40 years to assure his daughters had a good, Catholic education all the way through their college degrees, along with everything else his family needed.

Michael’s role of “Dad” quickly changed to “Nonno” 29 years ago when the first of his four granddaughters was born. Michael’s love for his granddaughters was truly unmatched. He couldn’t bear more than a few days without seeing at least one of them which is a true testament to the unconditional love he had for his family. This is how Michael’s legacy will live on - through his infectious smile, constant laugh, favorite Italian songs (which he was always singing), and endless games of scopa.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Monday, January 23, 2023, from 9:30am until 10:45am, and to his funeral mass 11:00am at St. Christopher Church, 13301 Proctor Road, Philadelphia, PA 19116. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem, PA.
