Obituary for Mary E. Chiaramonte (Welling)

Chiaramonte, Mary E., 76 of Las Vegas, NV, passed away on March 7th, 2021, in Rydal, PA, after spending the last few months with her son, daughter in law and three grandsons. She was born in Columbiana, OH, to the late Robert Welling and Margaret Altman. Mary attended Bowling Green State University and eventually moved to Erie, PA.

Mary Welling was married to Doug Chiaramonte on March 13th, 1971, had one son and became a proud Grandma (don’t call me that). She spent thirty-two years in Erie, PA, and owned a business managing health care and dental practices in the tri-state area with her husband. Mary and Doug moved to Las Vegas, NV, together in 2001. She enjoyed the last 13 years working for Wyndham Destinations. She developed many friendships there and a west coast work family that meant the world to her.

Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed many passions and hobbies throughout her life. Travel with her family was important to her. Destinations were frequently chosen based on the location of a famous roller-coaster or amusement park. Museums were equally important. She loved to play golf and go dancing with her husband and devoted a lot of time to cooking, gardening, and art. Mary was always learning new skills and immersing herself in something new and usually eclectic. In her teenage years, it was playing the banjo, riding motorcycles, and writing poetry. As an adult, it was American Sign Language, piano tuning, and calligraphy. When Mary decided to volunteer her time, she went to clown school, adopted the character name Koko Puf and began volunteering at Children’s Hospitals and schools. Anywhere she could bring joy with storytelling, puppets, balloon animals, and art.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Doug Chiaramonte. By her parents, Robert Welling and Margaret Altman, and a brother, Robert Welling. She is survived by her son, Vince Chiaramonte and his wife, Jasmine; grandsons Luca, Rocco, and Nico of Philadelphia. Her brother-in-law, Dennis Chiaramonte; Nephews David and his wife Barbara; Scott and his wife Wendy; Stephen and his wife Patricia, all of Erie, PA. Mary is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a few hundred 45- 50 yr. old children from the Erie area that always considered her a second mother.

Plans are being made to celebrate her life. If you would like to be notified, please email mecmemorial13@gmail.com. As a mother, grandma, and friend… she will be greatly missed.
