Obituary for Luigi Carriero

LUIGI CARRIERO, age 89, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2022. Devoted husband to Maria (nee Melilli). Loving father to Thomas Carriero and his wife, Bridget, as well as Gino Carriero and his wife, Norma. Beloved grandfather to Nicole, Joseph, Jason and Justin. Dear brother to Tonino Carriero and his wife, the late Antoinetta; Claudio Carriero and his wife, Rosa; the late Alfredo Carriero and his wife, the late Rina; the late Mario Carriero and his wife, the late Antoinetta; and the late Enzo Carriero and his wife, Nunzia; also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Luigi was born in Campomarino, Italy in 1932, where he spent his early life in the company of his parents, five brothers, and extended family. It was there where he first developed his passion and talent for Opera. Luigi discovered that he had a natural talent and love for music, singing as a young boy. Throughout his life, he always shared his love and talent with his family and friends whenever he had the opportunity to do so. He would leave those who heard his voice amazed by its power and elegance. He truly had a special talent.

Luigi emigrated to the United States in 1962, via Ellis Island, New York. Later that year in Philadelphia, PA he met his beautiful wife Maria whom he has been married to for 60 years. Their story began when Luigi’s friend arranged a double date at a restaurant where patrons were allowed to go up on stage to sing. When the couple met at the restaurant, Luigi was introduced to his date and his friends. It was on that double date that he caught his glimpse of his future, Maria. He knew he had met the girl he was going to marry. Luigi got up on stage and with his operatic voice he began to sing “Oh Marie”. From that moment, Maria became the love of his life and the feeling was reciprocated.

Luigi developed and lived many passions. He had a true love for nature and was especially fond of growing flowers, as well as his prized tomatoes in his vegetable garden. Those tomatoes were the prime ingredient to many wonderful and festive meals that were shared with family and friends. Later in his life, Luigi became an avid walker to help keep fit. He would frequently tell stories about how much he enjoyed his walks. He would always tell everyone “You know how many miles these legs have on them?”.

Luigi is survived by his four beloved grandchildren. He was proud of and cherished each one of them. He always showered them with his love and affection. Most of all he loved his family and friends. He instilled good values in his children and grandchildren that have served them well. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation Thursday, April 7, 2022, from 10:45am until 12:15pm at LOUIS A.
